Support SB 818 to Protect Communities, Livestock, and Mountain Lions

CALL TO ACTION—CALIFORNIA—CURRENTLY ONLY FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS

What SB 818 Does:  Authored by Sen. Alvarado-Gil

  • Establishes a five-year pilot program, “Tree and Free,” in El Dorado County, allowing qualified houndspersons to use nonlethal methods to haze and deter mountain lions identified as potential threats.
  • Aims to restore mountain lions’ natural cautious behavior around humans and dogs, reducing the risk to livestock, pets, and communities.
  • Requires data collection on the effectiveness of nonlethal hazing to guide future management strategies across California.

Why It’s Good for Conservation and Public Safety:

  • Protects Mountain Lions: Nonlethal hazing reduces the need for lethal action.
  • Safeguards Communities: Helps reduce potentially dangerous daytime lion sightings and encounters near homes and schools.
  • Supports Ranchers and Farmers: Minimizes the growing livestock losses by proactively deterring lion attacks rather than reacting only after livestock has been harmed.
  • Science-Based: Collects real data on nonlethal hazing, ensuring policy decisions remain grounded in research and real-world results.
