Years in the making.
An opportunity to weigh in.

California has released its draft California Bobcat Conservation and Management Plan after five years of research and planning. CDFW is accepting public comments through November 1, 2026.

This is a chance to help shape the management framework for bobcats. The draft does not reopen hunting. Reinstating a season would require separate action by the California Fish and Game Commission.

HOWL's position

We support a science-based path toward restoring regulated bobcat hunting while maintaining healthy populations. The final plan should give decision makers an accurate record and a practical way forward.

  • Use sound evidence. Ground decisions in current research, accurate harvest history and regional conditions.
  • Define the next steps. Explain the analyses, safeguards and decisions needed to evaluate a future regulated season.
  • Make progress accountable. Set clear priorities for monitoring, reporting and public review.
